Part two of a Chinese generative search study: how systematic Web/App source differences and answer entities that do not match the visible citation pool require monitoring of answers, sources, interfaces, and freshness together.

July 2026 Chinese Generative Search Research (Part 2): Web and App Answers Differ - How Should GEO Monitoring Avoid False Conclusions?

Different answers to the same question on a platform's Web and App surfaces do not necessarily mean that someone measured incorrectly. The Chinese generative search study published on July 17, 2026 finds systematic source-set differences between those two interfaces on the same platform.

That directly affects GEO reporting. When the entry point is not recorded, a team can mistake an interface difference for content optimization, a platform update, or competitor activity.

Why citations cannot fully explain the entities in an answer

The study reports two findings that require caution: about 13% of brand exposures could not be matched to the contemporaneously crawled citation pool, and about 71% of contact-information exposures could not be matched to crawled page body text.

This does not automatically mean that a system made an error. Possible reasons include timing differences between crawling and retrieval, page elements outside the captured body, synthesis across multiple signals, hidden or dynamic content, and the study's observation boundaries. The key point is that visible citation links are not a complete audit trail for every fact in an answer.

Businesses should therefore ask not only, “Which URL did the AI cite?” but also, “What did the AI say?” Price, phone number, address, capability, qualification, and medical or financial claims require separate checks against their sources and current official facts.

Treat the entry point as a monitoring dimension

At a minimum, tag every observation with platform, Web/App surface, login state where relevant, question version, time, answer text, visible citations, brand exposure, critical facts, and human verification result.

Compare longitudinally within the same entry point first, then discuss cross-surface differences. Do not compress Web and App into one platform-average score unless whole-platform coverage is truly the business goal and the sample, prompts, and weights have been explicitly designed for it.

For local services, retail, recruiting, education, and healthcare, where contact data matters, make “correct contact-information surfacing” an independent quality measure. It must not disappear behind mention rate or citation count.

Maintain separate source and fact ledgers

The first ledger captures visible evidence: domain, URL type, publication date, official/media/directory/store category, and whether it was cited.

The second captures answer facts: brand name, capabilities, eligibility, price or contact detail, limitations, and agreement with current official information.

The ledgers must connect, but neither replaces the other. When an AI surfaces an old price or a wrong phone number, the team can distinguish an outdated source, uncited synthesis, interface behavior, or a missed official update instead of blindly rewriting content in bulk.

The study boundary is also a publishing boundary

This research observes a particular period, question set, and four Chinese-language Web/App platform interfaces. It does not establish a ranking law for all Chinese AI products, and it does not prove that revising a page causally increases brand exposure. The figures 8.3%, 12.4%, 39 days, 68 days, 13%, and 71% are descriptive statistics in this sample, not service promises or industry KPIs.

GEO Radar at https://www.georadar.top can support fixed question sets, periodic multi-platform comparisons, and competitor analysis. High-stakes facts still need human verification and an official-site update process. Reliable GEO monitoring checks the entry point, the answer, the fact, and the evidence together.
