Your Page Was Not Cited by AI: Diagnose Citation Failure Before Rewriting

When an AI does not cite a page, the usual reaction is to change the title, add keywords, and expand the copy. The failure may be earlier: the page was not discovered, its facts do not fit the question, its evidence is unclear, its version is stale, or the platform does not display sources for this kind of question.

Different causes need different repairs. Indiscriminate rewriting can even remove the value of long-tail pages.

A preprint released March 10, 2026 proposes a taxonomy of citation failures and targeted repairs. In its document-centred benchmark, the authors report a relative citation-rate improvement while modifying a smaller share of content, and note that some documents face problems optimisation alone cannot solve. Those experimental figures are not a performance promise for enterprise websites, but the diagnostic order is useful.

Locate the failure point in four steps

First, confirm the page is accessible, indexable, and has a clear canonical URL. Second, verify it directly answers the target question and puts key definitions, conditions, and conclusions in findable locations. Third, check that data, comparisons, and qualifications have sources, dates, and scope. Fourth, inspect whether the answer cited an alternative source, showed no source, or synthesized the page's facts incorrectly.

Make only changes that correspond to the diagnosed issue, and retain the hypothesis, change, release date, and retest. Do not bulk-insert competitor names, absolute promises, or irrelevant FAQs; that does not show the problem was repaired.

When not to optimise further

If the question lies outside the company's real service scope, facts lack verifiable evidence, a regulated claim is unapproved, or the platform is unsuitable for the decision, the right action may be to clarify a boundary or stop testing. A report should permit “unresolved” or “not applicable,” not force a growth conclusion.
